Evaluation into Live Briefs
Black History Month exhibition
The brief was to submit an image which highlights Black History Month. The brief was set by the Afro-Caribbean society. The images were for an exhibition which was held at the Leeds Corn exchange. The location was successful as this helps celebrate Leeds as being a diverse, multi-cultural city in England. I personally found this networking experience beneficial as I was able to meet similar designers to my practice. For instance, I have met students who studied fashion photography and fashion communication, their work also resembles diversity and culture. This will help develop my practice further for future collaborate briefs.
For the brief, I decided to create a poster which highlights talent in the black community. The poster was for an emerging artist. I developed many skills, such as Photoshop, as I tend not to use this software. I also gained the skill of time managing, as I only had one day to create this poster to meet the deadline. This has prepared me for the industry in achieving strict deadlines that may occur in the work force. After our images were finalised, they gave use another deadline to print of our image. Therefore, we worked as a team in printing of our images. I had to consider printing format where I decided to print on a gloss finish to achieve a poster aesthetic.
To set up the exhibition we all worked as a team. This was a great networking platform to meet other designers and artists in Leeds Arts University. I enjoyed this team work as I felt apart of a community. Whiles the exhibition was happening, I gained successful feedback. This opportunity allowed practice to have a voice which made me more confident in my design work. This also allowed recognition towards my brand, in encouraging people to collaborate.
Overall, the brief was successful as the poster design related to my practice in supporting diversity and people of colour community. The poster relates to critical race theory of their needing to be more role models of colour to create less ignorance. I also explored cultural appropriation, by embracing cultural heritage. This was one of the main themes within the exhibition. For the future, I will definitely contribute to exhibitions which relate to my practice. As this was a great platform to network and find similar designers in the creative industry.
