Reflection on Team Work

6B2

Internal Work Experience

For the "Tell a Lie" brief, this was an internal collaborative brief. I enjoyed working in this group as we were allocated different roles. I also feel the group contained various talents, for instance Hugo was more specialised into video making, which made our presentation strong by a video being created. As this was a weeks project we created a time plan which help keep us on track. I felt this has prepared me to work with short deadlines in the future.

We came up with a brief to convince a target market of students that Nao, an R & B singer, is looking for models, makeup artists and dancers for her new music video. My role in the group project was to design the posters and flyers. Working in a team helped me develop my designs further as I tend to struggle to refine my designs. Working collaboratively helped develop the posters further by keeping the colour of the logos consistent by colour as well as keeping the same typeface for Nao's brand.

Once the designs were developed and finalised, we considered format. As a team, we decided to stick to a gloss finish for the flyers and a matt finish for the posters. The flyers were more successful, as the gloss finish made the flyers more believable. We decided to make the flyers A5 and the posters A4. We then allocated these flyers around different Universities. This was recorded from our video presentation. I enjoyed this process, as I tend to run out of time to present my work. This helped me develop my practice further by presenting my work by photography.

Overall, we got one response from a dancer from Leeds Beckett University. To help push this project further we could of visited University which specialised in Dance and performance to aim at a specific target market. However, regardless of this, this project was very successful and we worked in a team well by everyone being allocated roles fairly. I also felt more confident as my designs were chosen. In past group work, I have felt more shy with my designs but this project has really encouraged me to work in a team with creatives in the future.

Client Work Experience

I worked with a fashion photography student who asked me to design her end of year publication. The publication is about sustainable fashion. The photography content was sent and it was my role to order the publication for the client. The concepts were already discussed by the client in the briefing. My role as a designer was to design the layouts with the concepts discussed for each section. Overall 70 pages were designed.

The process worked by feedback from the client. The suggested ideas were stated to ensure the designs were the best quality for the end of year show. I found this way of working, at times challenging, as we did not have enough time. For this project we had a two week deadline. This was not enough time for the amount of content and development required. I also found this project challenging, due to some concepts not making sense from what the client wanted. My design process is very clean and minimal, and the concepts expressed were very expressive and overbearing at times. However, this was a fantastic opportunity for developing my portfolio in the investigation of the link between fashion and graphic design.

For the future, I will be more realistic with time management and express this in the briefing. This will help ensure the outcome is completed in time. I usually find client work challenging, as it is based on opinions. To develop this further, I will have to gain the skill to speak up as a designer if I agree or don't agree with concepts suggested. I will find a professional tone in communicating this.
